Global consumption of natural gas

Analysis

Since the 2008-2009 crisis and until the COVID-19 pandemics, gas consumption had steadily increased over the years. In 2020, global natural gas consumption was down 2.3% from the previous year due to the health crisis.

In 2021, global natural gas consumption rebounded and rose 5.6% (4,037.4Gm3), surpassing pre-COVID levels. Europe now accounts for 14.1% of the world’s natural gas consumption, and the EU-27 9.8%.
