Biomethane units connected to the gas network in France

This map identifies all the biomethane units connected to the gas network in France in August 2021.

Sources : GRTgaz (2020)

In August 2021, 295 units were injecting biomethane into the French gas network.

Projects are mostly connected to the distribution grid (86%), but also increasingly to the transport grid (the choice between both is made according to the Injection law of November 2019. Most facilities are agricultural (81% of injection units), followed by water treatment plants (8%), industrial facilities (4%) and non-hazardous waste landfill (3.7%).

Even though facilities can have a considerable capacity (118GWh for the biggest one), half of facilities have a capacity smaller than 15GWh/year (in particular, agricultural sites and water treatment plants tend to have smaller capacities). Grand-Est and Hauts-de-France are the most dynamic territories with respectively 1255 and 921 GWh of production capacity.
