Share of natural
gas in Europe’s
final consumption
of energy

The share of natural gas in the final consumption of energy refers to the ratio between the total consumption of natural gas (industrial, residential/service and production of electricity) and the final total consumption of energy for the year 2021.

Analysis

In 2021, the share of natural gas in the final consumption of energy for the EU-27 was 21.9%.

In France, the share was 20.6%: it is a little bit less than the European average and it is due to the widespread use of electricity to heat housing. This situation is specific to France, which has a large number of nuclear power plants.

Producing countries, or countries close to producing countries, obviously have a greater share of gas in their final consumption of energy.
