Biomethane units connected to the gas network in France

This map identifies all the biomethane units connected to the gas network in France in August 2022.

Sources : GRTgaz (2022)

In August 2022, 457 units were injecting biomethane into the French gas network.

Projects are mostly connected to the distribution grid (88%), but also increasingly to the transport grid (the choice between both is made according to the Injection law of November 2019). Most facilities are agricultural (84% of injection units), followed by water treatment plants (7%), industrial facilities (3%) and non-hazardous waste landfill (3%).

Even though facilities can have a considerable capacity (122 GWh/year for the biggest one, in Seine-et-Marne), half of facilities have a capacity inferior to 14 GWh/year (indeed, agricultural sites and water treatment plants tend to have small capacities). Grand-Est and Hauts-de-France are the territories with the highest production capacities, being respectively 1646 and 1447 GWh/year.

Between January and September this year, 92 new biomethane injection units were set, which represents an increase of 55% of the total number of injection units compared to mid-2021. Some territories are particularly dynamic : Nouvelle-Aquitaine (with a rise of 86% compared to mid-2021), Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (80%) and Ile-de-France (79%).
